Catalan music will feature highly at WOMEX, the biggest international event dedicated to world music
  • Twenty Catalan companies and institutions are taking part in WOMEX at the Catalan Arts stand of the Ministry of Culture
  • The band Txarango will be performing in Katowice as part of the official WOMEX showcase programme

Once again this year, the Catalan music sector will have a stand at WOMEX, organised by the Ministry of Culture through the Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies (ICEC) under its internationalisation brand Catalan Arts, representing 20 Catalan companies and institutions.

WOMEX, the twenty-third edition of which is being held in Katowice (Poland) between 25 and 29 October, is the most international music meeting in the world and the biggest conference of the global music scene, featuring a trade fair, talks and a showcase festival. The event has been held every year since 1994 and brings together more than 2,400 delegates from over 90 countries.

The Ministry of Culture, through the ICEC, has been attending WOMEX for many years, following the fair’s itinerary to different European cities such as Seville, Copenhagen, Thessaloniki, Cardiff, Budapest, Santiago de Compostela and now Katowice. WOMEX has always formed part of the international strategy to promote the Catalan music industry, as it provides an excellent platform for Catalan bands as well as attracting a huge range of companies (management agencies, record labels, publishing houses, etc.) from Catalonia. With a stand under the international banner of Catalan Arts, the Ministry of Culture aims to give a big boost to the business activities of the different players involved while at the same time offering a cohesive image of the sector. The stand is a work and exhibition space open to industry professionals designed so that they can carry out business meetings, meet up with their foreign counterparts and provide exposure for the variety and vitality of the Catalan scene.

The Catalan stand (57-62) will host representatives from the following 20 companies and organisations, among which are two from Catalonia's strategic markets: aupaQUARTET, Bacana, Deco Pilot, Diggers Music, Escenapart, Èxits Produccions & Management, Fira Mediterrània de Manresa, Institut Ramon Llull, Julio Quintas - Management & Booking, La Nave Bruja / Ojos de Brujo, Mercat de Música Viva de Vic, Nadhra 360º, Petit Indie, Rosazul, Sound Diplomacy, Taller de Músics, Tori Sparks Music - Glass Mountain Records and Catalan Arts – the Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies. In addition, Sonde3 Producciones (Stand 105) and MiraMundo (26-33, 36-39) will have their own stands.

Among the activities being organised on the Catalan stand, on Saturday, 28 October at 1 pm, there will be a networking session aimed at generating professional contacts.

Under its internationalisation brand, Catalan Arts, the ICEC has also published a booklet of companies to further promote the participation of Catalan representatives at WOMEX.

Txarango, selected to perform at Womex 2017

Txarango has been selected to take part in the next edition of Womex on Saturday, 28 October. Thus Txarango will join the Catalan delegation of companies and professionals that will attend Womex through the Catalan Arts booth. Txarango performance in Womex is the culmination of a year of intense activity of the group in some of the main European professional fairs. On January 13, Txarango performed at Eurosonic Noorderslag (Groningen, Netherlands), within the ETEP programme (European Talent Exchange Programme) in which ICEC is a member. Another reference fair, Babel Med (Marseille, France), hosted the Catalan band on March 18. All these actions have also been supported by ICEC and its internationalisation brand Catalan Arts.
