High turnout from Catalonia at the at Freiburg international performing arts and music fair

  • Thirteen Catalan entities will be taking part at the Ministry of Culture's Catalan Arts stand at the Internationale Kulturbörse Freiburg, a major event for performing arts festival programmers and managers from Germany and central Europe
  • The fair is set to take place from 21 to 24 January 2018 and will bring together German and central European performing arts festival programmers and managers

The 30th Internationale Kulturbörse Freiburg (IKF) performing arts and music fair will host 13 Catalan cultural companies, enterprises and institutions from 21 to 24 January. Catalan presence in Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany) will be focused at the Ministry of Culture stand, organised by the Ministry of Culture, through the Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies (ICEC) under its internationalisation brand Catalan Arts where seven companies from the music and performing arts will be represented. The Ministry of Culture aims to use the stand to promote the sector by publicising new Catalan proposals amongst industry professionals, mainly programmers and managers of street art, theatre, dance, children's shows, circus and music festivals.

Of the 13 organisations attending this year, 5 will be putting on live performances as part of the Kulturbörse Freiburg fair programme. They are: La Intrusa (nominees for this year's Freiburger Leiter award for Street Theatre), Centre de titelles de Lleida in Central Foyer, Fernando Pose in Theatersaal 2, as part of the Variétés gala, Peus de Porc at stand ZF5 and Tombs Creatius at stand ZF3.

In addition to these companies, others will be attending the fair with the aim of making new contacts that will open up the German market for them and strengthening ties established in previous editions. The other Catalan companies that have confirmed their attendance at the Internationale Kulturbörse Freiburg 2018 are: Bigolis teatre, Campi qui pugui produccions, Cia La Tal, Imaginart, Ponten Pie, PuntMoc and Últim Vals.

Amongst the support activities organised by the ICEC, there will be a networking session on Monday 22 at 18.30 at stand 2.3.36 Government of Catalonia – Catalan Arts with the aim of facilitating contact between Catalan companies and the programmers and festivals attending.

The ICEC is likewise promoting a new series of individual advisory meetings between attendee companies and German professionals.

In recent years the Catalan performing arts and music have become a benchmark for German programmers, thanks, amongst other things, to Catalan participation in various editions of the Kulturbörse with productions that subsequently successfully toured Germany and Europe.

It is worth noting that in the last three years the Freiburger Leiter street theatre award has been won by three Catalan companies. In 2015 it went to La Tal for The Incredible Box, in 2016 Las Polis for Las Polis and in 2017 PSiRC for Acrometria.

More than 4,500 people attended the 2017 edition of the Kulturbörse. Many visitors to the IKF are festival programmers and heads of programming at cultural institutions, many of them municipal, who attend the fair in search of street art, theatre, magic, circus, installation and music proposals, which they subsequently sign up for festivals or for the venues they manage.

A total of 400 exhibitors took part, with 170 live performances (20-minute showcases) by artists and groups from 31 countries.
