South by Southwest (SXSW), which takes place from 9 to 18 March in Austin (Texas) and this year celebrates its 25th anniversary, will showcase six Catalan bands and five Catalan film productions as part of its festival programme.

SXSW is an event that combines the worlds of cinema, music and technology. Considered one of the most important music festivals both in the United States and globally, since its inception in 1987, SXSW has brought together more than 300,000 people, 15,000 industry professionals, including numerous agents, record labels, publishing companies, managers and journalists, and over 2,200 artists from all over the world.

The Catalan music scene will be represented by six acts spanning a variety of musical genres, such as psychedelic rock courtesy of The Zephyr Bones (La Castanya), electronic music from Museless (Luup Records), rock from Núria Graham (El Segell del Primavera), pop-folk music from Estúpida Erikah (Luup Records), indie and tecno-pop from Joe Crepúsculo, and trap from Bad Gyal (Canada); who has also been selected as a festival headliner.

Meanwhile, SXSW also showcases a huge array of films in its cinema section and has this year put together a programme which features five Catalan productions: Tierra firme, Teatre de guerra, Constructing Albert, Santa Ana and the Comtes series, nominated for one of the festival’s Film Awards in the Excellence in Title Design category. In parallel, members of the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival committee will also be taking part in two SXSW Mentor Sessions. Further information on the film productions included in the programme can be found at catalanfilms.cat.
