MiRRA international music exchange dedicated to jazz takes duo Chicuelo & Mezquida and saxophonist Irene Reig and her Parisian Trio to Paris

The musicians collective MiRR and the agency Danger Hill have organised the MiRRA international music exchange, the first part of which will take place in Paris on the 25 and 26 September. As part of this event, Chicuelo & Mezquida and Irene Reig will perform in Paris, at Le Bal Blomet and at the Sunside Jazz Club, respectively.

The press briefing presenting this exchange will take place at the Catalan Government Delegation in France on 12 September at 10:30 am.

The musicians collective MiRR works on multidisciplinary projects based on jazz, improvised music, contemporary music, digital arts and choreographed arts. To organise MiRRA, this organisation and the Danger Hill agency received the help of the Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies and the support of the Institut Ramon Llull, the Institut d'Estudis Baleàrics and the Regional Department of Cultural Affairs of Île-de-France, among others.

Juan Gómez 'Chicuelo', Marco Mezquida and Irene Reig, the three Catalan musicians who will perform in Paris, are very well-known in their field. 'Chicuelo' is originally from Cornellà de Llobregat (Barcelona) and is one of the most distinguished and experimental flamenco guitarists in recent years. He has worked with many musicians, such as Mayte Martín, Miguel Poveda and Antonio Carmona. He also won a Goya Award in 2013 for the song ‘No te puedo encontrar’ from the film Snow White, to which Catalan singer Sílvia Pérez Cruz lent her voice.

Marco Mezquida, for his part, is one of the most distinguished jazz pianists in Catalonia today. Mezquida, who has worked very closely with Sílvia Pérez Cruz in recent years, studied at the Catalan College of Music (ESMUC) and his CV also includes collaborations with Lee Konitz, Dave Liebman and Carme Canela. Mezquida was selected Musician of the Year by the Catalan Association of Jazz and Modern Music Musicians (AMJM) on no fewer than four occasions.

'Chicuelo' and Mezquida have been working together since the Taller de Músics suggested they perform as a duo at an opening a few years ago. It was there that they realised their collaboration could be successful. On their most recent album together, entitled No hay dos sin tres, both musicians worked with the percussionist Paco de Mode.

Saxophonist Irene Reig was born in Barcelona in 1993 and she has studied in Barcelona, Amsterdam and Philadelphia, locations which are represented in her work. In 2017, she released her first album, VIEWS, and has worked with musicians like Dick Oatts, Jesse Davis and John Swana. After having been part of a variety of projects, she is currently leading her own septet, called The Bop Collective, while writing and managing Irene Reig Parisian Trio, her small-scale project which she will perform at the Sunside Jazz Club.

Finally, the second part of the MiRRA musical exchange will take place at different places in the Catalan-speaking regions (Barcelona, Valencia, Palma de Mallorca, Formentera and Ibiza) from 2 to 6 October and all of the concerts will be by Benjamin Sanz, French musician and member of the MiRR collective.
