Impressive Catalan presence at the Biennales Internationales du Spectacle (BIS) in Nantes, a benchmark trade show for the performing arts in France

• Thirteen entities from the music and performing arts industries in Catalonia will attend the BIS performing arts trade show in Nantes on 22 and 23 January, with a Catalan Arts stand set up by the Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies.

• The Biennales Internationales du Spectacle (BIS), the last of which welcomed a total of 13,195 professionals, is a key date for the live arts sector and a gateway to the French market.

The Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies (ICEC), under its internationalisation brand Catalan Arts, will set up a stand to represent the thirty Catalan entities from the music and performing arts industries attending the upcoming Biennales Internationales du Spectacle (BIS), a performing arts trade show to be held on 22 and 23 January.

Organised every two years since 2004 by the magazine La Scène and directed by Nicolas Marc, the BIS is considered one of the key meetings for the cultural sector in France and the only one capable of bringing together, on average, more than 13,000 participants and 350 exhibitors.

The Catalan companies, agencies and entities attending this year’s trade show are: A2manos, Barcelona Sound Platform, Black Music Productions, Bucráa Circus, Compañía de Circo “eia”, Companyia de Comediants La Baldufa, Fes-t’ho com vulguis!, Itinerània, Palosanto Projects, Viu el Teatre and Zipit Company, as well as Institut Ramon Llull and the Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies.

The presence of Catalan professionals at the BIS is nothing new. This will be the seventh event at which Catalonia has set up an institutional stand and the sixth at which it has been located in La Place des Tournées, a central area within the hall that will house a total of 168 other independent stands. This space is of key importance, as French programmers often visit to find artistic content to book for their events for the upcoming season. This means that it is an excellent opportunity for participating companies and agencies to showcase their artistic work to a specialised audience and thus get their name out there.

The rest of the exhibition space in the hall is divided into five sections: one with facilities and services; one with training centres for professionals in the cultural sector; one for publishing representatives and the media; one for professional organisations, and one focussing on social protection for cultural professionals. The overall aim is to equip professional attendees with the widest range of information and access possible.

In order to offer greater exposure to the Catalan entities, the ICEC has also published a leaflet under the Catalan Arts brand, which will be distributed among the accredited professionals throughout the event.

International presence of Catalan cultural companies

The Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies’ participation in the BIS in Nantes falls under the policy put forward by the Ministry of Culture to foster the international presence of Catalan cultural companies.

The ICEC Markets Area is working on a wide-reaching programme of activities and services to promote the international presence of Catalan cultural companies and to act as a springboard for their presence on key booking and event platforms, and is thus helping to market artistic services and creations made in Catalonia. They promote market platforms and strategic events in Catalonia, subsidise projects to promote the international presence of cultural companies and organise institutional cultural missions and stands at the main trade shows and events around the world.

Through the internationalisation brand Catalan Arts and the network of ICEC offices in Europe (Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, London and Paris), the entire programme of activities and services is launched to connect, advise and provide support to creative companies who wish to increase their international presence. With this objective in mind, the Catalan Arts brand reinforces the presence of Catalan companies and creations at international trade shows and events like the BIS in Nantes.

Catalan Arts also offers a wide range of materials and resources to both Catalan professionals seeking to develop their projects on an international level and to professionals from other countries who are looking for artistic productions for their festivals or cultural events.
