The Catalan artists Núria Graham and PAVVLA are scheduled to perform at the FOCUS Wales music festival in Wrexham, Wales, on 7 and 8 May.

This is the third time the Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies and its internationalisation brand, Catalan Arts, Mercat de Música Viva de Vic and FOCUS Wales have collaborated to foster the exchange of performers and industry professionals between Catalonia and Wales.

From 7 to 9 May, the city of Wrexham in North Wales will come alive as the epicentre of FOCUS Wales 2020. Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, the international showcase festival will see over 250 of the best up-and-coming bands from around the world perform across its 20 stages. Núria Graham's folk sound, with its psychedelic nuances, and PAVVLA's dreamy indie pop music will be featured this year. These two up-and-coming artists have performed at many international events and will be taking part in the third consecutive collaboration between the Catalan and Welsh music industries driven by the Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies (ICEC) and its internationalisation brand, Catalan Arts, Mercat de Música Viva de Vic (MMVV) and FOCUS Wales.

Over three days, FOCUS Wales brings together roughly 15,000 industry professionals and music lovers from the general public, making it one of the best chances for performers to network with professionals from the UK and abroad. In this regard, we encourage music professionals looking to break into the UK market to attend as delegates and take advantage of the range of opportunities, including networking events, round table sessions and showcase sets, to spark new relationships.

As it did during its previous visits to the festival, Catalan Arts will organise a networking event to help the Catalan performers make themselves known. This meet-and-greet signifies a unique opportunity for the artists to get together with festival and venue programmers and other key industry figures.

The collaboration between Catalan Arts, the MMVV and FOCUS Wales began in 2018 with concerts performed by singing duo Maria Arnal and Marcel Bagés, Rupit singer-songwriter Matthew McDaid, and psychedelic rock band The Zephyr Bones. In 2019, two other bands took part: dreampop group Agost and Museless, who showcased their electronic music. Meanwhile, the Welsh artists Jack Found, The Gentle Good, Chroma and Hannah Willwood were invited to perform at the MMVV in 2018 and 2019.

Internationalising the music industry

The ICEC Markets Area, through the Catalan Arts brand, works with Catalan creative and cultural companies to promote and facilitate their access to the Spanish and international markets, connect them with key international figures and advise them on how to raise their profile abroad.

Thanks to the funding earmarked for supporting internationalisation projects in the music industry, in 2019 Catalan companies were able to take part in 162 professional events around the world, 11 of which took place in the UK.
