  • Since 2012, a total of 24 Catalan bands have performed at Eurosonic as part of the ETEP with the support of the ICEC

One of the most influential festivals in Europe, Eurosonic Noorderslag, has selected the Catalan bands Beach Beach, Bearoid, Olde Gods and Txarango to perform at the 2017 edition.

Eurosonic Noorderslag is one of the most important professional indie and pop-rock events in Europe and will take place from 11 to 14 January in Gröningen (Netherlands). Open to both professionals and the general public, Eurosonic is at once a festival and a market showcasing the latest trends in music and up-and-coming European artists.

The four Catalan bands have also been selected to join the European Talent Exchange Programme (ETEP) which will open the way for them to take part in music festivals all over Europe in 2017.

The ETEP, of which the Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies - Ministry of Culture is a member, is supported by the European Commission and aims to promote and support the circulation of European musical talent through over 100 festivals, radio stations and media all over the continent.

Eurosonic provides a platform for the ETEP programme, gathering, over the course of four days, some 4,000 professionals from all over Europe (managers, programmers, agents, producers, bands and major festival directors) who sign programming and exchange agreements.

The Catalan bands will perform at Eurosonic over the first three days, when attendees have a more international and professional profile.

Beach Beach – 11 January, 23:00 and 12 January, 22:15
Olde Gods – 12 January, 22:15
Bearoid – 13 January, 22:50
Txarango – 13 January, 1:15

Promoting musical talent through European festivals

Eurosonic Noorderslag is the platform for the European Talent Exchange Programme (ETEP). This ambitious pan-European project promotes the mobility of musical artists, enabling them to perform at music festivals across Europe.

ETEP member festivals attending Eurosonic receive economic incentives to hire at least one act to perform at each edition (from a country other than the one where the festival is held). This system is supported by the European Union, the EBU radio broadcasters and the European festival association YOUROPE.

Currently more than 100 festivals from 44 countries participate, including the Primavera Sound and VIDA festivals.

Since ETEP's beginnings in 2003, the member festivals have presented a total of 2,690 acts by 972 European artists, according to ETEP figures.

Catalan involvement in the ETEP project

With the aim of supporting and promoting Catalan artists, the Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies (ICEC) joined ETEP in 2011 and since 2012 has supported the Catalan bands chosen each year.

The ICEC's participation is part of a policy of support being implemented by the Ministry of Culture to promote Catalan music and the internationalisation of companies in this industry. With this objective, the Ministry of Culture takes part in professional programmes like ETEP, in international networks such as European Music Export Offices (EMEE) and regularly attends professional music major events such as Babel Med (Marseilles), Womex (Katowice 2017) and Classical Next (Rotterdam 2017).

Since the 2012 edition, a total of 24 Catalan groups have performed at Eurosonic, taking part in the ETEP project with the support of the ICEC:

2012 - Mujeres, Muchachito Bombo Infierno, The Suicide of Western Culture, Za!
2013 - Evripidis and his Tragedies, The Excitements, Za!
2014 - Bongo Botrako, Headbirds, La Pegatina, Seward
2015 - Joana Serrat, La Sra Tomasa, Maika Makovski, Mourn, Oso Leone
2016 - beGun, CaboSanRoque, Núria Graham, Ocellot, Svper
2017 - Beach Beach, Bearoid, Olde Gods, Txarango

In 2016 the Catalan bands selected were Svper, BeGun, Ocellot, Núria Graham and Cabo San Roque. In the first half of the year they gave over 40 performances at national and international festivals, according to information provided by their managers to the ICEC.

Beach Beach, Bearoid, Olde Gods and Txarango will be taking in the 2017 edition, which will provide opportunities for them to appear at the many festivals in the ETEP network in 2017.
