Four Catalan groups selected to perform at Eurosonic 2018 and take part in the European ETEP programme with the support of the Catalan Institute of Cultural Companies

Mueveloreina, Museless, Odina and The Zephyr Bones, selected to perform at Eurosonic, will be joining the European Talent Exchange Programme (ETEP) to facilitate their inclusion in the line-up of numerous festivals throughout Europe in 2018

Since 2012, a total of 24 Catalan bands have performed at Eurosonic as part of the ETEP with the support of the ICEC

The Catalan bands Mueveloreina, Museless, Odina and The Zephyr Bones are to perform at the next Eurosonic showcase festival with the support of the Catalan Institute of Cultural Companies (ICEC) through Catalan Arts, its brand for internationalising cultural and creative companies. The 32nd Eurosonic, one of the most influential festivals and a leading professional meeting place for indie and pop-rock music, will be held in Groningen (The Netherlands) from 17 to 20 January 2018.

Open to both the general public and industry professionals, Eurosonic is a festival as well as a marketplace for the latest musical trends, presenting emerging European artists. Every year, the Netherlands show attracts hundreds for professionals (managers, bookers, programmers, artists and more) to what has become a leading centre for exchange and networking in the industry.

Professionals attending Eurosonic in January will have the chance to discover the critical discourse of the ‘electrapical’ (electronica, trap and tropical) duo Mueveloreina (Helsinkipro), experience the warm delicacy of Odina (El Segell del Primavera), buzz with the intense, introspective electronica of Museless (Luup Records), relive the summer with the beach wave and psychedelic pop of The Zephyr Bones (La Castanya) and contact their respective managers with a view to signing them.

The four Catalan bands will also take part in the European Talent Exchange Programme (ETEP), an initiative supported by the European Union with the aim of facilitating the movement and signing of European groups at festivals around the continent.

As a member of ETEP, the ICEC will subsidise the bands’ travel expenses to Groningen and support their promotion through their Catalan Arts brand for internationalising cultural and creative companies.

Since the 2012 edition, a total of 24 Catalan groups have performed at Eurosonic, taking part in the ETEP project with the support of the ICEC. Last year, the chosen bands were Beach Beach, Bearoid, Olde Gods and Txarango, who were also able to join the ETEP and benefit from contracting opportunities with European music festivals in 2017.

Promoting musical talent through European festivals

Eurosonic Noorderslag is the platform for the European Talent Exchange Programme (ETEP). This ambitious pan-European project promotes the mobility of musical artists, enabling them to perform at music festivals across Europe. ETEP member festivals attending Eurosonic receive economic incentives to hire at least one act to perform at each edition (from a country other than the one where the festival is held). This system is supported by the European Union, the EBU radio broadcasters and the European festival association YOUROPE. Currently more than 100 festivals from 44 countries participate, including the Primavera Sound and VIDA festivals. Since ETEP's beginnings in 2003, the member festivals have presented a total of 2,690 acts by 972 European artists, according to ETEP figures.

Catalan involvement in the ETEP project

With the aim of supporting and promoting Catalan artists, the Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies (ICEC) joined ETEP in 2011 and since 2012 has supported the Catalan bands chosen each year.

The ICEC's participation is part of a policy of support being implemented by the Ministry of Culture to promote Catalan music and the internationalisation of companies in this industry. With this objective, the Ministry of Culture takes part in professional programmes like ETEP, in international networks such as European Music Export Offices (EMEE) and regularly attends professional music major events such as Babel Med (Marseilles), Womex (Katowice 2017) and Classical Next (Rotterdam 2017).
