Catalan Arts' virtual stand to showcase Catalan jazz music at the digital edition of Jazzahead! 2021

  • The fair will take place online from 29 April to 2 May
  • Jazzahead! is one of the leading marketplaces for the European professional jazz sector
  • Catalan Arts will present the audiovisual piece The Emerging Catalan Jazz Scene, on the jazz sector in Catalonia, as part of the official Jazzahead! programme

From 29 April to 2 May, Jazzahead! will once again be a critical meeting point for jazz music professionals from all over the world. The current circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic have forced the event to transform. And so, what used to be a yearly gathering in Bremen, Germany, is now a massive online event.

As in previous editions, Catalan Arts, the internationalisation brand of the Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies (ICEC), a part of Catalonia's Ministry of Culture, will be in attendance. Through its virtual stand it aims to promote jazz music made in Catalonia and support the sector, facilitating access to the German and international markets for Catalan companies, strengthening the links between professionals, and making Catalan proposals known to the international professional public, mainly programmers and those responsible for music festivals around the world.

The Catalan companies that have so far confirmed their attendance at Jazzahead! 2021 are: Bacana, Balaio Producciones, Jamboree, Mas i Mas, Puy & Co, Sambach and Taller de Músics. Representatives of Jazz I Am (the international meeting of jazz showcases in Barcelona), the Vic Live Music Market and the ICEC will also be in attendance.

In recent years, Catalan jazz has become a benchmark for international programmers thanks in part to the participation of Catalan companies and jazz ensembles in the Catalan Arts - ICEC stand at Jazzahead! Bremen. Whether at the last edition in 2019 or in previous years, the fair has always enjoyed a solid turnout of companies at the Catalan stand, with artistic productions that have later successfully toured Germany and Europe.

The Jazzahead! fair has been connecting the international scene since 2006 and has positioned itself as one of the most important international gatherings in the jazz sector. The last on-site edition, held in 2019, brought together 3,408 professionals from 64 countries and all areas of the jazz scene: artists and promoters, bookers, record labels, agencies, publishers, festival and club programmers, distributors, lobbying institutions, associations, the press and service companies related to jazz in all its stylistic variants.

Given the mobility restrictions and measures currently in place to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, the organisers have opted to rethink this year's event by moving the professional programme online. Through a digital and global platform, professionals will be able to converse, network, meet, exchange impressions, take part in conferences and workshops, and attend a whole programme of virtual concerts/showcases.

The ICEC Markets Area and its Berlin office will moderate the Catalan Arts virtual stand, and meetings will be held during the four days of the fair to continue promoting Catalan talent and building a network of professional relationships that will later open doors to international bookings and tours.

In order to promote the Catalan delegation to Jazzahead! 2021, Catalan Arts will present the audiovisual piece The Emerging Catalan Jazz Scene as part of the official Jazzahead! programme on 29 April at 12.30 pm.

Finally, Catalan jazz will be promoted through the usual Catalan Arts digital channels, as well as through a Catalan Music playlist on Spotify.
